I've opened up the box again & taken out the flash card. Neither of these is able to read the drive though.

Windows tells me that the drive isn't formatted - in the disk manager it tells me that they type is RAW. There are 3 scripts: fczyo, alduro and sesa.txt. In terms of the specification of the box, it has 4 Network connections on the rear (Wan, DMZ & 2 LAN) & a DSL connection. Create a bootable USB drive. A lot of them embedded distros (I'm not familiar with PFSENSE) have a prebuilt flash-based install that you can just dd onto the disk.
