While we're on the Hiking topic: I recently created a web app in my free time to visualize GPS tracking files in a 3D terrain. It's almost exclusively folks who were hiking on trail, lost the trail, and then became disoriented. Seems to be pretty similar, 100% offline topo maps with additional things like route planning, detailed trails, GPS, etc. All areas of activity may be affected. But seems like no login needed for most functionality. I can easily switch to those maps when needed, and of course download them for offline use - but not the full dataset, instead you can draw a polygon of map boundaries that you want to have offline. It is a "lifestyle" application designed to drive pro subscriptions. I haven't thought much about the privacy implication but I figure if you go through the trouble of installing a PWA and granting it access to your location then why not? That has its tradeoffs. I currently live in Rocky Mountain National Park where I climb, hike, and ski nearly every day - my partner also works for the Park Service.
