The tidal rivers are teaming with bait, and all the gamefish are highly active at this time. Now is the time for big stringers of Bass from the tidal rivers. The fish can become finicky, and size oriented, so sizing down can sometimes be the ticket to getting more bites. Anglers are still finding fish shallow, but they are being found on offshore structure also. This is probably due to insect hatches, and activity. Lake Chesdin has been producing some big Bass lately. For the folks casting inside the inlets, paddle tailed swim baits are what most are having success with. The few hours before daylight can be productive also. Lipless crankbaits can be especially good right now, along with spinnerbaits. Tautog are a good bet, if good bait is acquired. The cooler weather has ignited the Trout, and Puppy Drum, inside the tributaries of the bay. The smaller waters allow them to be accessible, even during rough wind conditions. The James, Chick, Rapp, and Potomac rivers receive the most pressure, but the Pamunkey, and Mattaponi are fishing good also. The James can be exceptionally good for big Crappie. I walked most of this walkway and it was an easy walk with some sandy soil but not so sandy that made it hard to walk or bike. They too, tend to roam more at this time.
